Reading Tip for Parents #5
When kids learn to read, they match printed words to words they have already heard.
Because of this, children who hear more talk at home know more words. They start school with a larger vocabulary. This early start helps them learn much faster as they grow.
Reading Tip for Parents #4
Talk about errands or things you will do today. Use sequence words (first, next, last, finally, beginning, middle, end) when describing your day to children. You may say, "First, we are going to put our boxes in the boat. Next, we are going to put our camping equipment in the boat. After that, we will put gas in the boat. Finally, we will get in the boat and go to camp."
This will help students with comprehension skills and understanding what they read.
Reading Tip for Parent #3
Re-reading stories often builds fluency. Repeat exposure to favorite songs, stories, poems, and images.
